Different kinds of lettuce growing happily in elevated pots
One of the most interesting projects for me this year in the Channel 6 garden is growing vegetables in pots that are hung at various heights in the garden. We currently have a few different kinds of lettuce and chard as well as tomatoes in those hanging pots. Using regular potting soil for this project, we planted our seeds in early spring and I have been admiring how well this idea has worked. The lettuce especially grew quickly and looked very healthy and tasted great.
When I had tried growing lettuce in pots in my own garden in the past, I had my pots sitting on the ground and the rabbits were always a problem. They could eat the entire crop in just a few days and it was very discouraging.
I think this is a great idea for gardeners with limited space for planting because it uses vertical space while leaving the garden beneath open for other crops. The hanging pots are out of reach for rabbits and other pests and it seems to me that the elevated pots do not attract as many bugs. The down side of course is that the pots need to be watered, but with our rainy Milwaukee weather this year, even that chore is not bad.
