Fall Garden Crops

Second crop of Beets, turnips, carrots and mustard greens growing in raised bed

This year in the Channel 6 Garden, we pulled out some of our crops that were finished on August 1 and replanted the same vegetables immediately. Sharon Morrisey, the horticulturist in charge had us write that second planting date onto the row markers so we could judge the timing of our crops.

The items we replanted were peas, beans, turnips, beets, carrots and mustard greens. Since this has been a fairly dry summer we needed to water the new plantings and especially the small seedlings when they emerged. However, as of September 26, we are already harvesting peas and beans and both turnips, carrots and beets are growing nicely and we are expecting a great second crop. I thought this second planting made so much sense, since an empty garden space in the middle of summer just seems wrong and apparently you can get a second planting of some vegetables to mature even in Wisconsin.
