A Cold Wet Spring

Spring Bulbs

Front Garden with Spring Bulbs

This year we have had unusual weather, even for Wisconsin. It has been unseasonably cold with a lot of rain. This in turn has caused all of the spring flowers and trees to be behind schedule. We are at the Memorial Day weekend and I am still concerned about planting out tender annuals.

The bright side to this weather is the spectacular show of spring bulbs. This year my daffodils and tulips have been blooming since April. I have my garden planted so that the bloom time is spread out because a hot spell in spring can make those spring bulbs bloom and fade very quickly.  By planting bulbs with different blooming times, the show is spread out and lasts a bit longer. This year the early bulbs were still blooming when the later ones started to open. It was the best spring garden in ten years!
