Can Raspberries Tell Direction?

North End of Raspberry Patch

When I decided to try growing raspberries, I was told the old wives tale that raspberries grow in a northernly direction so I should plant my new bushes on the south end of whatever space I had to allow room for them to expand. Now, doesn’t that sound odd?

I followed those directions and for 6 years now, the raspberry canes have expanded north into the vegetable bed. I notice the new growth but kept thinking that they have to grow in that direction because the border of the raised bed was just beyond where they were originally planted.

However, last year I made some changes. My raspberries had advanced north and by this time were growing in the middle of the raised bed. I dug out some of the oldest canes and put in a lot of compost and peat moss in both the old raspberry section and also in the north end where I had been growing vegetables.

This spring, when I went out to work on the garden, I noticed that I had a lot of new small raspberry plants on the north end and only one new plant on the south side. Does anyone know why that would be? Can a plant actually know which way is north?
